Summer is coming to an end, and my favorite season is less than a month away. These beautiful roses are starting to bloom again as the weather cools, and their natural beauty reminded me of a book I was reading to my daughter yesterday.
In the story, the parents are trying to teach their children to be satisfied with the simple joys in life and not the superficial. They explain that the things that God gives us are much better than anything we can buy. They reference Matthew 6:25-34 when Jesus says,
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
In these verses, Jesus is telling us not to worry because God is in control. One example given is how He provides for even the smallest of creatures, like the birds.
It’s useless to focus on the frivolous things of this world. After all, these things will soon pass away. Instead, focus on doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord and He will take care of you!
As a Christian, it can be difficult to be separate from the world…after all, we are living in it. It takes a conscious effort daily to choose to do the right thing and focus on the end goal. As a Christian, the end goal is to glorify God with our life.
In the story I was reading to my daughter, the mother wanted to teach her children to enjoy the simple things in life that God has given us instead of buying a new toy every time they went to the store. She was teaching them to be thankful for the simple flowers that grow by the road side and how God has allowed them to provide more beauty than anything money can buy.
To be a Christian mom means teaching our children what is important and what really matters. So many things don’t matter in the eyes of God and should never replace what does matter to Him.
