How Our Prayers Change Over Time

I was taught growing up that prayer is simply people speaking to God. You say a prayer before you eat a meal, before a sports event, before you go to sleep, or when someone specific needs to be prayed for. What I did not realize until recent years is how important prayer is in my daily life.

When you mature in your walk with God, your prayer changes. At supper time, it changes from “God is great, God is good…” to a much more specific prayer. Throughout your day, little prayers to God become even more important when you find out someone is sick or when you are having a rough day. You see the miracles of healing and restoration and understand it was possible through the power of prayer.

Prayer is our main communication to God through Jesus Christ. The letters in the word “pray” can help us determine what to speak to God about.

Praise God for His greatness and all of His many blessings. Repent of your sins and ask for forgiveness. Ask God for His help in all areas of your life. Yield to God and surrender to His will for your life.

It is important to remember that prayers are individual. There is no right or wrong way to pray. The acronym mentioned above is simply a guide to help us know what to pray. Another great resource is the book of Psalms in the Bible. It is full of beautiful prayers if you ever find yourself unsure of what to pray.

Our conversations with God improve as we draw closer to Him, which is very similar to how we are with friends or family. As you get to know someone, you are able to communicate with them better. Spending time in God’s word and praying to Him will strengthen your relationship and your prayer life.

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” ~Ephesians 6:18
